FreeSr. Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, will share her insight on the novel and her continued work in criminal justice reform during a free event on November 11 at the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law.
Her book, originally published in 1993 and now available as a graphic novel, was on the New York Times Best Seller List for 31 weeks, and it has since been adapted into an Oscar-winning movie, a play, and the most performed new opera of the 21st century.
Joining Sr. Helen will be Catherine Anyango Grünewald, the graphic novel’s illustrator, and Rose Vines, Special Projects Director for the Ministry Against the Death Penalty and scriptwriter for the graphic novel. After the panel, copies of Dead Man Walking graphic novel will be available for purchase and signing.
In addition to the College of Law, the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center and the Jesuit Social Research Institute are co-sponsoring the panel.
A reception following the discussion will be held in the Law Library and will feature artist Becky Gottsegen’s installation titled, “Exonerated: Portraits of the Wrongfully Convicted”, on display in the College of Law Library until December 2. A number of the exonerees will be in attendance, offering a rare opportunity to engage directly with those whose stories have been commemorated through the art.
This November 11 event at the College of Law is one of several with Sr. Helen hosted by Loyola. The Office of Mission and Identity will host a second panel discussion and book signing on November 13 at 7:00 pm at Holy Name of Jesus Church. The Institute for Ministry, the Center for Editing and Publishing, Holy Name of Jesus Church, and the Ministry Against the Death Penalty will co-sponsor that panel.
The panel will begin at 6:00 pm in Room 308 of the College of Law building. This event is open to the public and will also be livestreamed on the College of Law’s YouTube channel.
