Bio

Steven Blackmon is a highly accomplished church musician, organist, choral director, and conductor with a distinguished career in both sacred music and higher education. With years of experience in leading choirs, directing ensembles, and fostering the development of young musicians, Steven is recognized for his exceptional skill and passion for the art of music in worship.

As a choral director, Blackmon has led numerous choirs to success in both liturgical and concert settings, working to elevate the musical and spiritual life of the community. He has a particular expertise in choral conducting and repertoire, shaping dynamic and expressive performances that resonate with both the singers and the congregation.

As part of his work in church music, Steven is an accomplished conductor, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to inspire and guide musicians toward excellence. He collaborates with a variety of musical organizations and ensembles, bringing a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to music making in all its forms.

Blackmon teaches as an adjunct instructor of pipe organ at Loyola University in New Orleans as well as at the New Orleans Theological Baptist Seminary, where he trains the next generation of organists and musicians. In this role, he brings an extensive performance background and a pedagogical approach that emphasizes both technical skill and artistic interpretation. In addition to university teaching, he offers private organ lessons to students of all levels, sharing their passion for the instrument and its rich musical tradition.

Blackmon holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in organ performance and has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the musical community, both in academic and religious contexts. As Music Director/Organist, Steven has served St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church since 1986, developing one of the city’s most admired music programs. He is active in the American Guild of Organists and has just completed his third term as dean of the New Orleans Chapter. A frequent performer and collaborator, he remains deeply committed to the growth and vitality of church music and the broader musical landscape.
