Physics is an essential component of a liberal education. Necessary, and even obvious, aspects of the enterprise of physics include development of critical thinking skills and rigorous investigation of the definitions, assumptions, and context of physical and mathematical intellectual structures. Physics demands that the student recognize and question his or her assumptions, and then construct a well-formed logical argument leading to any resulting conclusion. Our program stresses the need for integrity in scholarship. The study of physics can inspire in the student a sense of awe in the structure of the universe.

The mission of the Physics Department at Loyola University New Orleans is therefore twofold:

  1. to increase understanding of the physical universe through fundamental research involving faculty and students,
  2. to offer students insights into our understanding of, and modes of thought about, the physical universe by offering a challenging curriculum taught in small classes by a dedicated faculty readily accessible to students and interested in their scholarly welfare.
