Wolf Pack Wednesday: Student Life and Ministry

Subject line: Do Whatcha Wanna

Sent: September 22, 2022

Student Life at Loyola

College isn’t only about academic growth—it’s also a time to form connections, pursue your interests, and try new things. And the Department of Student Life & Ministry (SLM) offers endless ways for you to get involved and do whatcha wanna outside the classroom!

You can explore leadership development and engagement opportunities through student organizations, fraternity and sorority life, new student programs, university traditions, and more. We are here to help you make the most of your Loyola experience. Visit our office on the Lower Level of the Danna Student Center or connect with us online!

Find Your Fit

One of the best ways to enrich your collegiate years is to join clubs and organizations that fit your interests. With more than 130 student organizations on Loyola’s campus, you’ll find plenty of ways to get involved. Browse HowlConnect or download the CORQ app to explore organizations and events. For example, Dance Marathon is looking for new members! Dance Marathon is a national nonprofit organization that raises funds for Children’s Hospitals across the country. Loyola’s Dance Marathon team raises funds throughout the year for the New Orleans Children’s Hospital through fundraising, friendly competitions, and programming ending the year with a 6 hour long dance-a-thon! Last year our Dance Marathon team was able to raise over $10,000! To join the Dance Marathon Planning Team, email Daniel Harris, Assistant Director of Student Life.

Mix and Mingle

The Krewe Leaders will serve as a resource for you throughout your first semester of college.  Come reconnect with them and other first years at the First Year Social this Friday, September 24, from 3 – 5 p.m. in the St. Charles Room. There will be snacks, games, and good music. Bring a friend, and don’t forget your mask! For more information, email Dale Hall, Coordinator of Student Engagement.

Geaux Greek

Loyola University hosts 14 Greek organizations with rich traditions of brother and sisterhood, philanthropy, service, and academia. Learn more about how to join Sorority and Fraternity life by visiting our website.  Also, don’t miss our fun-filled events coming up for students to learn more about our chapters—including Silent Disco this Monday, September 27, from 6 – 9 p.m. in the St. Charles Room! All are welcome! For future events for you to learn about our chapters, visit HowlConnect.

Enhance Your Commute

Our commuter students have many ways to stay active on campus! Spaces and places like Satchmo’s and The Hub/SGA provide a space for recreation, student performances, gaming, and just taking a break. In addition, Commuter Assistants act as guides for commuter students to navigate campus life successfully. While the Commuter Student Association coordinates events, like a weekly trivia night.  CSA will also be hosting programming in Satchmo’s Lounge every day this week to welcome you back to campus!

  • Monday, Sept. 20: Join us for lunch in Satchmo’s for Ramen Noodle Bowls.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 21: Swing by Satchmo’s for free school supplies giveaways.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 22: Get to campus early and stop by Satchmo’s for a Waffle Bar to fuel up before class!
  • Thursday, Sept. 23: Come by Satchmo’s and enjoy a frozen treat!
  • Friday, Sept. 24: Join us at lunch time for a french fries bar that you can load with toppings!

Find Your Spiritual Center

Christian Life Communities are our Ignatian-based life and faith sharing groups that meet weekly and help students find God in all things (in whatever way they understand God to be). In addition to general CLCs, you can also join special interest CLC groups, like student athletes, Spanish speakers, LGBTQ+, and a secular spiritual exploration group. Most students say CLCs become like a family on campus, and are a place to recharge and reflect during the busy week. Learn more at the CLC Meet & Greet tonight, September 22, at 7 p.m. in the St. Charles Room. The deadline to register to join a CLC is September 23!

The Mass of the Holy Spirit, the spiritual beginning of the new academic year, will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 28 at 12:30 p.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church. Come together with the entire university community to give thanks and to pray for the coming year.

First Year Retreat is a chance to make meaningful connections with other first year students and reflect on how our Jesuit values relate to you as you begin life at Loyola. Based in Ignatian spirituality, this retreat is open to students from all faith and non-faith backgrounds. The retreat will be October 16 at the Solomon Episcopal Conference Center in Loranger, LA. Register by October 1. The fee is $20 and includes all meals and transportation. Contact Laura Alexander, University Minister, for a fee waiver or with questions.
