History of the Society for Philosophic Study of Genocide and the Holocaust

Since 1978 the Society for the Philosophic Study of Genocide and the Holocaust has been dedicated to exploring various kinds of philosophic responses to the most pressing issues of our troubled times. In this bloodiest of human centuries state-sponsored mass murder has become so commonplace that even the most graphic and moving depictions of genocide do little to move us toward transformations of the way we think. We have monuments, museums, and memorials but only the beginnings of philo-sophic transformations.

The SPSGH was founded to promote a philosophic discussion of genocide and the Holocaust in the belief that a completely open-ended and non-sectarian approach to these issues is the best way to foster research and philosophical studies for the required transformations of the way we think and proceed in this murderous, business-as-usual world.

The last few years of SPSGH have been very encouraging. Our membership has grown considerably. Attendance at our three APA sessions (East, Central, and Pacific) has been very good indeed. Beginning in 1996 the SPSGH has begun to add to its learned meetings a series of international and thus the international conferences provide a more accessible venue for many of our members.

Professors Alan Roseberg and Alan Milchman are the editors of the Holocaust and Genocide Studies book series published by Editions Rodopi. Papers presented at any of the SPSGH meetings and conferences may be submitted for possible publication in future volumes of this series.

Membership dues have been set at a very modest $10 per year. If you would like to become a member of of SPSGH, please send your personal check for $10 made payable to LOYOLA UNIVERSITY-SPSGH to the Vice-President/Treasurer at the address printed below. Upon receipt of your annual dues, you will receive a copy of the SPSGH Constitution and all future mailings for the year. Membership in SPSGH also brings voting and petitioning rights.
