General Description of Course Content

 In this course we will consider expert opinions on the prospects for local governance in the 21st century.  We will look at questions of diversity, technology, and the role of virtual associations as they relate to governance.  We will consider the influence of the global economy on local governance, and how that influence may change our attitudes towards matters of political order, freedom and equality.  Throughout the course, we will be concerned with the question of the relation between strong community and good governance.  Our orientation will be towards the future.

Description of Major Assignments

 There will be an in-class, midterm exam on Tuesday evening June 27th and an in-class, final exam on Tuesday evening July 25th.  The in-class examinations will be one part multiple choice and one part essay.  Blue books are required.  In addition, there will be a ten page writing assignment on the topic of local governance in the 21st century.  The writing assignment will be due on the evening of Tuesday, July 25th.

Breakdown of Grading System

 Each of the in-class midterm and final exams will each count for 40% of the final grade.  The writing assignment will count for 20% of the final grade. The grading scale is as follows: 100-95, A. 94-85, B. 84-75, C. 74-65, D. 64-0, F.
