Policies and Guidelines

As a student in the Clinical Externship program, you must agree to the following:
  1. To fulfill a two semester commitment to your placement. You understand that keeping this commitment is your professional responsibility and vital to maintaining the credibility to the Law School's extern program. Failure to complete the work as agreed endangers the viability of the particular placement and the possibility that future students may be placed there. Withdrawing from the course is only permitted under emergency circumstances and requires the written approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  2. To work at the placement 9-12 hours per week for a minimum of 120 hours for 2 credits per semester, exclusive of class and travel time. There will be absolutely no remuneration for extern work.
  3. You agree to report your hours on a weekly basis.
  4. To attend class, read assigned material, participate in class discussions as appropriate, and maintain a weekly journal.
  5. To read and understand the educational goals and understand that your work consists largely of your performing legal research and writing, summarizing and analyzing legal documents, courtroom observation, and reflecting on and relating to those experiences in the larger context of judicial and legal systems. You agree to seek feedback on your work on a regular basis.
  6. To maintain all work strictly confidential, and otherwise to conduct yourself in a moral and ethical manner, working on projects only while supervised by a judge and/or an attorney.
  7. To not accept employment during the course of the externship.
