Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some frequently asked questions and answers about the Clinical Externship. If these do not answer your question, feel free to e-mail Prof. Molina at molina@loyno.edu
When do I sign up for a Clinical Externship?
Students are encouraged to apply beginning the start of the spring semester of the academic year prior to the start of your desired externship. For example, for an extern placement for the Fall 2006, you would apply in the Spring 2005 semester. Applications are available through Professor Luz M. Molina in Room 110A. The deadline to submit applications will be on your application form, but generally, it is the last day of February.
What are the requirements?
You must be given permission to register by Prof. Molina. You must be in the 50% of your class in order to register and participate. Some placements require you to be a 3L before they will allow you to participate. Consult the placement list below to see whether you need to be a 2L or 3L. You must make a commitment for two semesters, unless the placement allows you to participate for one semester only; you also need permission from the externship faculty if you intend to participate for one semester only. Also, you may not have outside employment unless you are specifically authorized by the placement and the externship faculty. Class participation is required. Class includes journals, selected readings and discussions, and student presentations. You must also keep a time sheet.
How many credit hours will I receive?
Two credits per semester. Each credit represents 60 hours of work at the extern placement, plus class participation.
