Week One:
August 31 -- No reading assignment. Students must subscribe to the class listserv by 3:00 p. m. September 2.
Sept.1 -- Stavrianos, ch. 1
E-mail assignment (due Sept.2): review the Loyola Library's tips on how to evaluate webpages. E-mail assignment: Explore the World of Hunter Gatherers and mail one-paragraph reaction to the website to me at <mffernan@loyno.edu>.
Week Two
Sept. 7 -- Stavrianos, ch. 2, "What it Means for Us Today," pp. 37-39.
Sept. 9 -- Stavrianos, ch. 3.
E-mail Assignment: (due September 10) surf throught the following websites: parallel agricultural developments and Mesopotamian Civilization and write a one to three-paragraph analysis of the role of agriculture in early civilizations. Post the analysis to the class listserv.
Week Three
Sept. 14 -- Stavrianos, ch. 4 .
Sept. 16 -- No reading assignment.
Week Four
Sept. 21 -- Stavrianos ch. 5.
Sept 23 -- Chapter 5 continued.
E-mail assignment: (due September 17) Post an analysis of Greco-Roman Culture based on your reading of the websites on the Olympics; the rise of Augustus on the class listserv.
Week Five
Sept 28 -- Stavrianos ch. 6; map.
Sept. 30 -- First Exam (chapters 1-6, internet readings, lectures and class discussions).
E-mail Assignment: (due Oct. 1) post a one to three-paragraph analysis on the Aryan Invasions thesis (see the essay by Siddartha Jaiswail ) on class listserv.
Week Six
Oct. 5 -- Stavrianos, ch. 7, legalism.
Oct. 7 -- Stavrianos, ch. 8, "What it Means for Us Today," pp. 158-161.
E-mail Research Assignment: (due Oct. 8) Search the World Wide Web and find a site that deals with the decline of a Classical Civilization. Post the url for the site and your reasons for choosing it on the class listserv.
Week Seven
Oct. 12 -- Stavrianos, ch. 9.
Oct. 13. -- Ch. 9 continued.
E-mail assignment: (due October 1) review the website on medieval towns and post a one to three-paragraph analysis on the listserv on the topic of life in a medieval town. N. B. This is a rather large website and will require additional time to view. Please plan ahead.
Week Eight
Oct. 19 -- Stavrianos, ch. 10; Maps of the Islamic world from the vantage point of the seventh and sixteenth centuries.

E-mail assignment: (due Oct. 22) post a one to three-paragraph review of the online Ghengis Khan exhibit on the listserv.

E-mail assignment: (due October 29) post a one to three-paragraph review of the creation of a Spanish Christian identity on the listserv.

Nov. 4 -- Second Exam (chapters 7-14, internet readings, class lectures and discussions).
Week Eleven

E-mail assignment: (due Nov. 12) post a one to three-paragraph site review of the Kindoms of the Medieval Sudan to the class listserv. Refer to the Loyola Library's tips on how to evaluate websites.
Week Twelve
Nov. 23 -- 17, 18; " What it Means for Us Today," pp. 279-282.
E-mail assignment: (due Nov. 23)Review the 1492 exhibit and the website on the Ottoman Empire and post a one to three-paragraph analysis to the listserv on the expansionist impluse in Europe and the Near East.

Week Thirteen

E-mail assignment: (due Dec. 3) post a one to three -paragraph reaction to the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuit mission to bring Christianity to Japan on the class listserv.
Dec. 7 -- Stavrianos, ch. 21, "What it Means for Us Today," pp. 333-336.

Tuesday December 14, 9:00-11:00 -- Final Exam
POSITION PAPER ASSIGNMENT: Search the history journals in JSTOR for an article appropriate for this class. Once you choose the article read it carefully and write a one to three-page position paper which summarizes the argument, remarks on types of sources used, and contains your critical assessment of the effectiveness of the essay. The paper is due December 7.
