Mid-term and Final Study Guide

In preparing for the mid-term exam I suggest that you review the following with particular care:

1.) Points that I have returned to repeatedly throughout the course (e.g., the place of interpretation in human existence)

2.) Diagrams from the blackboard (e.g., symbols as models of and for reality)

3.) Concepts from your assigned reading that were highlighted during our classroom conversation (e.g., Buber’s definition of “experiencing”)

Here are samples of the kinds of question you might expect in relation to each of the sources just mentioned.

Sample question #1: What role does interpretation play in the counseling process?

Sample question #2: What is the connection between symbols and assumptive world?

Sample question #3: Explain in your own words the metaphor of “game” in the essay “The Sacred Game of Conversation”?

• The format of the examination will be short-answer essays like the samples above.

•The exam will include 15 questions, from which you will choose 10.

• I will include a set of questions for extra credit.
