Writing Up Your Field Research
1. Identify and describe the institution you visited.
2. Give a general description of the order of the service.
3. Describe some of the symbols (including symbolic gestures) which you observed, and interpret their meaning as best you can.
4. What did you interpret as the high point, the moment of greatest intensity or drama during the service? Describe it specifically enough that a reader can picture it in his or her mind. What did it mean as you understood it?
5. How would you describe the mood or atmosphere of the service? What elements created it?
6. How did the service you attended attempt to assist those believers who were present to harmoniously adjust their lives to an unseen order. (Be as specific as you can in responding by using concrete examples from what you observed.)
7. What will you remember from this service? Why?
8. How was this service like one in a religious setting with which you
are familiar? How was it different?
