Studying the literature of the Lost Generation in the place where it was written and understanding the impact of Paris on the group of writer will help students understand the cultural symbiosis between America and France. Further, a study of the Black writers, Ellison, Wright, and Baldwin, who fled racial and political oppression in America for the perceived intellectual freedom of Paris will help students define both real and imagined ideas of political and intellectual freedom and oppression. If you are taking this as Honors ENGL H 294, You will have a 20 page paper due at the end of the program. Course Requirements: Readings from the syllabus and class participation. No absences are allowed. Do not think I do not mean business. One absence will lower final grade one grade; two absences will lower grade 2 grades; and three absences will result in failure of the course. This is necessary because we must make class and trip time count to get three credits for the course. YOU MAY NOT MISS ANY TRIPS. THE SAME PENALTIES APPLY TO COURSE GRADE FOR MISSED TRIPS. Journal. You will be given questions to answer on the texts that should be done before class. You must bring your journal to class each day as well as the texts. Please buy a marbled composition book for your journal. They are easy to carry and you don’t lose information. I will probably have to ship them home, so I need you to follow this instruction. One three-five-page paper on a text discussed in class. Final Exam. This will be an objective and essay exam. All readings should be completed before the course begins. Books will be available in the Loyola bookstore, and students should buy books and read the assignments listed below before arriving in Paris. Then only a review of the text will be necessary before class. Since there will be several trips connected to the course, students will not have a lot of time to do first readings in Paris. Grading System: Students will receive the equivalent of one paper grade for reading and class participation; one paper grade for the journal; one paper grade for the paper; one paper grade for the final; and one paper grade for attendance. Total: five paper grades will constitute the final grade. Calendar: Week One: Living in Paris F..Scott Fitzgerald: Tender is the Night, “Babylon Revisited” Week Two: Memoir of Paris in the Twenties Gertrude Stein: Paris, e.e. cummings’ poems Week Three: Defining the Lost Generation: Redefining Men and Women Ernest Hemingway: The Sun Also Rises, Excerpts from A Moveable Feast Week Four: Defining the limits of the Lost Generation Malcolm Cowley, excerpts from Exile’s Return and other essays in packet. Texts: F..Scott Fitzgerald: Tender is The Night Ernest Hemingway: The Sun Also Rises Gertrude Stein: Paris, Picasso You may buy the texts anywhere; they will be available in the bookstore, but they are readily available anywhere. Bring them with you to Paris. DO NOT PLAN TO BUY THEM IN PARIS AS THEY MIGHT WELL NOT BE AVAILABLE. Other than the three texts listed above, you must pick up a readings packet from the English dept. office before you go to Paris. This packet contains all readings other than the three texts you have to buy. Suggestions: I suggest you buy a composition notebook. It is easy to carry; you can take notes on the field trips in it at the back, and I can read your assignments efficiently. Do not wait until you get to Paris to try to buy one. It will be expensive. DO NOT USE A SPIRAL NOTEBOOK!!!!! If you bring a laptop, you may buy wireless internet at FIAP. It is expensive, however, about thirty euros for 15 days. If you decide to buy that, you may type your journal. Do not plan to be able to type your journal in the computer room. It costs just as much, and you may not always be able to get an English computer. Half of the computers in the lab have French keyboards Vrƒ…P К Л а б ђ * b c d юя&A€Њи§јјјіјјєђђђээээђђђђђђђыђђх„а`„а & F$a$ ўи`—стщ7V,ќ§ !"œžŸ §ї§ѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕѕ№ѕ$a$„а^„аАа/ Ар=!А"А# $ %АЅ8@ёџ8 Normal_HmH sH tH <@< Heading 1$@&CJ]D@D Heading 2$$@&a$ 5CJ\<@< Heading 3$@&5CJDA@ђџЁD Default Paragraph FontZiѓџГZ Table Normal :V і4ж l4жaі _H(kєџС(No List 2B@ђ2 Body TextCJ4>@4 Title$a$5CJ &џџџџ!џџ z™ џџ z™V  ж 7Vr„…КЛабђ*bcdюя & A € Њ и ` — с т щ 7 V , ќ § !"œžŸЂ˜0€€иPŽ€˜0€€p`֘0€€ Ы€˜0€€иPŽ0€€ Ы€˜0€VиPŽ˜0€VиPŽ˜0€VpV`֘0€VиPŽ˜0€VиPŽ˜0€VиPŽ˜ 0€VИVрw€˜ 0€VИV ‹€˜ 0€VиbPŽ€˜ 0€VиPŽ˜0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы˜0€€p`֘0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы(0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы€˜0€€ Ы˜0€€p`Ц(0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы€(0€€ Ы˜0€€p`֘0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы€˜0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы˜0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€p`֘0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы˜0€€ Ы€ 7Vr„…КЛабђ*bЂ˜0€€и€Яš0€€и€Яš0€€и€Я˜0€€и€Я0€€и€Я˜0€bи€Я˜0€bи€Яš0€bи€Я˜0€bи€Я˜0€bи€Я˜0€bи€Яš 0€bи€Яš 0€bи€Я˜ 0€bи€Я 4РЪ8џПЯ и  B J Т Х Ч Я щ ё †ŠЂ}€C E П Х   Ї ъ ь NVe›Ђ::::::1zR! џ„h„˜ўЦh^„h`„˜ў.1zR!џџџџџџџџ˜ Ђocџ@€ŠŠаю9"ŠŠ — @ @џџUnknownџџџџџџџџџџџџGTimes New Roman5€Symbol3 Arial"Aˆ№аhOЪ…FƒRУ&‚RУ& )‰ Њ б№ЅРДД€>4d*+ сW3ƒQ№ппH№џџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџPHџџSyllabus Mary A.
