Primary Sources:

Most of the directly relevant primary material - vitae of Becket and collected correspondence - may be found in the original languages in:  Materials for the History of Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury. Edited by J. C. Robertson (Volumes I - VI) and J. B. Sheppard (Volume VII).  London:  Rolls Series, 1875-85.  The Rolls Series also goes under the name Rerum Britannicarum Medii Aevi Scriptores.  The Materials for the History of Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury comprise volume 67 of that series, in 7 parts.  Hereafter referred to as MHTB.

English translations of many documents relating to this period of English history, including many Becket documents, may be found in English Historical Documents, volume II: 1042-1189. Edited by David C. Douglas and George W. Greenaway.  2nd edition.  London and New York: Oxford, 1981.  Hereafter referred to as EHD II.

Authors of Lives (Vitae) of Thomas Becket:  It is important to remember that all of the contemporary lives of Becket were written after his martyrdom, and so naturally that event had a great influence on the authors.
