Medieval Studies Minor

Why study Medieval History and Culture?

While medieval history and culture are endlessly fascinating and full of surprises in their own right, what is of fundamental importance is that the medieval period is the foundation of modern history and culture, close enough to us to be familiar but distant enough to be studies dispassionately and without prejudice.

Medieval studies traces the evolution of Europe during the Middle Ages from a group of loosely tied kingdoms to a prosperous community of nations.  Topics include the role of the church, development of the feudal system, the rise of the nobility, the effects of the Plauge, the growth of trade guilds, the discovery of printing, the urbanization of peasantry, and the rise of science.
