In what area is China most dependent upon the USA?What was the native Taiwanese initial attitude toward the Guomindang (nationalist) government?   How/Why is Taiwan a possible source of U.S. and Chinese tension?

3. Focus Question: Why have the two Koreas taken separate paths and how has this development pointed to the strengths and weaknesses of both the capitalist and communist systems?
When did Korea become a Japanese colony? What advantages did Korea gain as a Japanese colony? What were the negative aspects of Japanese occupation? Why was Korea divided after WWII?  Why did North Korea invade South Korea in 1950? What nation came to the aid of the North Koreans and how did the war end? What has been the primary concern of the South Korean government ever since the 1960s?  How has the Korean government been affected by the rise of an affluent and educated middle class? What is still unclear about the direction North Korea will take?

4. Focus Question: What critical errors of historical judgment did the USA make in Vietnam and what problems does Vietnam face?
Which imperialist country was expelled from Vietnam after 1893?  What was the social and economic situation of the majority of Vietnamese under colonialization? Who formed the Viet Minh and what was its initial purpose? How did the anticolonial war end in 1954? Which countries aided North Vietnam attack South Vietnam?  What percentage of the Cambodian population was killed by the Pol Pot regime?  Which country has been the traditional enemy of Cambodia? Which country has been Vietnam's traditional enemy? What has been the economic situation in Vietnam between 1991 and 1996? What problems do Vietnam's economic development continue to face?
