What rivalry characterized most of second half of the twentieth century?  What traditional tsarist policy was followed by Stalin in regard to the expansion of Russian influence?  Which power had traditionally checked Russian expansion in central Asia, and why did the U.S. now take on that role? What were the goals of U.S. policy? How did the Soviets perceive Allied opposition to Russian control of Eastern Europe?  How did the Americans interpret the growth of large Communist parties in France and Italy?

2. Focus Question: What were the chief areas of conflict during the early years of the Cold War?
When, by whom and where was the term "iron curtain" first used?  When did the Soviets first explode a nuclear weapon?  What civil war first brought American intervention in post-war Europe? What was the "Truman Doctrine"? What was the aim of the Marshall Plan?  How did Stalin react to the policy of "containment?"  How did U.S. and Soviet policy differ in regards to German industrialization and reparations? Why did the Soviets blockade Berlin?  What were the results of the blockade?  How were NATO and the Warsaw Pact of 1955 similar, how were they different?  

3. Focus Question:  What issues bring Nato and the Warsaw Pact to the brink of war and how was war avoided?
 What were the implications of the Suez conflict of 1956?  What two East European countries resisted Soviet domination in 1956?  What lessons can be draw from these events?  What was the result?  Why did Khrushchev prompt the U-2 crisis?  Why did the Soviets build the Berlin Wall in 1961?  What prompted the Cuban missile crisis and how did it end?  When did the tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union begin to lessen?  What action in 1979 by the Soviets undermined continued detente? When and why did the Cold War end?

4. Focus Question:  What were the main developments in European society since WWII?
In what area have the nations of Western Europe made the most progress at cooperation? When and by whom was the European Economic Community formed? What problems have been raised by the trouble of the Maastricht Treaty? What is the EURO and what impact has it had?  How did the economic development of Western Europe differ from that of Eastern Europe, why?  What factors prompted external migration from and to Europe?  What tensions have resulted from external migration into Europe?  What was the major motivation for internal European migration from the late 1950s onward?  Since 1989 how have the new migrants to the West been received, why?  What factors have contributed to the sharp rise in working women?  What role does the increased life span of women have on the women's work patterns?  How has the situation of women in Eastern Europe changed after the fall of communism?
