1. Focus Question: How and why does socialism in Russia develop as a revolutionary movement?
When and why did the Russian government pursue a policy of general political repression? By 1900, what was the condition of Russia's working proletariat? In Russia, how did the policies of the Social Revolutionary Party, the Constitutional Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party differ?  What were Lenin's positions put forward in What is to be done?  What important tactical approach was proposed by Lenin in Two Tactics of Social Democracy in the Bourgeois-Democratic Revolution? What is the meaning of the terms "Bolsheviks" and "Menscheviks"? What two principles did Lenin add to "marxist doctrine"?

2. Focus Question: How did socialism for change upon Russia after 1905 and to what extent did it affect world socialism? 
What impact did Russia's defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905 have upon the internal government of Russia?  What promises did the tsar make to placate the opposition?  To what extent did the Nicholas II deliver on his promises?  From the peasant's point of view, what positive changes resulted? Who was Grigori Rasputin? For what two reasons did the late-nineteenth-and early-twentieth century European Socialists discussions continue to effect later political discussions?

3. Focus Question: How does the United States develop in the industrial age? 
Which industry was the first to become fully mechanized?  From where did much of the capital come for initial industrialization?  What impact did railroad construction have of American industrial development?   What economic factors gave rise to these institutions? When was the great period of German, English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish immigration? Which group suffered the most discrimination? From where did the "New Immigrants" come at the end of the 19th century and how where they different from early immigrants? How did these groups react to the prejudice and difficulties found in the US?   What factors worked against the formation of labor unions? How was the American Federation of Labor different from earlier and other labor movements? What was the attitude of state and federal governments toward organized labor from the 1870's through the beginning of the twentieth century? When did labor finally win federal complete protection to organize? Why did socialism fail to take hold in American labor movements?

4.  Focus Question: How did the Progressives attempt to deal with the problems of American industrialization?
Where was political power centered during the last quarter of the 19th century?  What role did the patronage system have in "boss politics?"  What was the aim of the progressives?  How did they seek to attain it?  What groups aided the progressive politicians?  What was the "common belief" of almost all these reformers?  What "general idea" motivated their activities?  What did Theodore Roosevelt see as his greatest domestic challenge?  What was the Square Deal?  What was its aim?  Characterize Roosevelt's foreign policy? How did Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson differ on the nature of business?  What did Wilson see as the role of the president?  What two impulses marked the progressive movement?
