1. Focus Question: What factors fostered regionalism in the American Republic? 
What compromise did the Constitutional Convention of 1788 reach in regards to the slavery issue?  Prior to what date, was the Federal Government unable to forbid the importation of slaves?   Why could the issue of slavery NOT be ignored?  What was the balance of free and slave states by 1820?  What was the nature of the "Missouri Compromise?"

2. Focus Question: What economic factors helped to "split" the American Republic? 
What was the basis of the Northern economy and why did it develop?  On what issue did American liberals often disagree with European liberals?  When, where and by whom was the first textile mill started in the US? Who bought the majority of Southern produced cotton?  What transportation "tool" aided in the movement of goods by the late 1840s?  What system most distinguished the Northern and Southern regions? To whom did the South sell the majority of its cotton?  What system most distinguished the Northern and Southern regions?  How did the railroad help "increase" regionalism and regional tensions? How did the Southern economy resemble that of many Latin American countries? When and why was slavery abandoned in the North?  What factors favored the maintance of slavery in the South? What was the life of an American slave like?  Where were most slaves utilized?  How did slaves attempt to preserve a sense of family and community; what undermined these efforts?

3. Focus Question: Where and how did the abolitionist movement evolve in the American Republic and what was the nature of the distrust between North and South?
What "general climate" aided the abolitionist movement?  How did the victory in the Mexican War contribute to the rising tensions over slavery?  During the discussions following the Mexican War, what were the fears of the South, of the North?  Why was the Republican party organized?  What was the impact of the "Dred Scott" decision of 1857?   How long did the Civil War last?  Whose election led to the succession of  Southern States?  In his denunciation of American slavery, what type of arguments does Daniel A Payne use?  What were the terms of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments?  What impact did the Civil War and the Reconstruction era have on the South?  How was the American Civil War important in the context of world history?

4. Focus Question:  How did the Canadian Experience differ from that of the United States?
When did the English gain control of Canada?  When did a larger English presence in Candad develeop?  What was the import of the Constitutional Act of 1791?  What led to the rebellions of 1837 in both Upper and Lower Canada?  Why did the Earl of Durham seek to reunite Upper and Lower Canada?  Why did the Canadians seek to strengthen their form of government and what mistakes did they hope to avoid?  What was the purpose of the British North america Act of 1867?
