1. Focus Question: What was the reform program of the philosophes and how did the hope to achieve it?
What did the philosophes attempt to do? What was their attitude toward reform?  How did Voltaire feel toward the English?  What was the general attitude of the philosophes’ toward human society, was it possible to improve it, how?  What did the authors of the Encyclopedia attempt to do? What impact did it have?  Where did the authors look for their inspiration?  How did they see the future welfare of humankind?  What was the attitude of most philosophes toward the monarchies?  What is "Enlightened absolutism"?  What was the goal of the enlightened rulers of the 18th century?  Which 18th c. ruler most embodied the enlightened ideal?  What type of ruler was Maria Theresa?  What was Joseph II's chief goal?  What were Joseph II's chief reforms?  Why did most of his reforms fail?  Why measures did Joseph II take in regards to religion?
