1.  Focus Question:  Who were the Minoans and what was their relationship with the Mycenaean Greeks? differ? 
  When and where did the Minoan civilization arise? What cultural role did Crete serve?  What cultures apparently influenced the formation of Minoan culture? What type of culture did the Minoan have? What evidence do we have that Greeks played a role on Crete?  What evidence is there that the Greeks displaced a non-Indo European people on the mainland? What was the probable relationship between Mycenae and Crete between 1400-1200 B.C.E.?  In what respects was Minoan society different from Mycenaean?  What was the probable basis of wealth of the Mycenaean kings?  Which peoples probably destroyed Troy?  What did the Greeks themselves believe caused the fall of the Mycenaean civilization? 

2.  Focus Question:  Explain the causes and the impact of the fall of Myceanean civilization and how the Greeks recovered?
What were the consequences of the collapse of the Mycenaean civilization? What is our best source of information concerning the Greek "dark ages"? What type of government existed in Homeric Greece? How was Homeric society structured? Who were the thetes and what did they do? Who were the majority of the slaves and what did they do?  Which qualities would a Homeric hero prize most dearly? Why is "city-state" not a completely accurate translation of the world  polis? What factors seem to have determined its location? When did the polisdevelop as an institution? What was the original form of the polis? What military advantage did the phalanx offer?  What was the usual cause of a hoplite battle in Greece?  What role did the creation of the polis and the phalanx have on the poisition of kings, why?  Who initially "won" power from the kings and why was this power not absolute? What was the social impact of the phalanx?

3.  Focus Question:  What were the causes and impact of the great Greek colonization movement? 
When did the Greeks begin their great colonization movement? What impact did colonization have on Greek life?  What other people(see: map - pg. 63) was expanding its colonies just prior to the Greeks? How did new wealth cause problems in the aristocratic polis?  Who generally supported the tyrants and what was their program of action? Why did the tyrants generally avoid war?  Why did the tyrants disappear?  What positive contributions did the tyrants make?

4.  Focus Question: What was life like for the Greeks during the Archaic period? 
What type of life did the peasants live?  What were the aristocratic values and how were they reflected in their lives? How many gods were in the Greek pantheon and how did they behave? For the Archaic Greeks (Greeks of the Dark Ages), what was the nature of religion, civil virture and private morality? What type of advice did the priests of Apollo give?  What role did the cult of Dionysus serve? What type of poetry did Theognis of Megara compose and what did it tell us about the situation within the Greek world?
