REVIEW SHEET 28 ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS OF  SOUTH AMERICA
pp. 326-332

1.   Focus Question:    How and why does civilization develop differently in South America in contrast to Mesoamerica?
Geographically speaking, what is the Andean region of South America like?  How did the people of the coast live during ancient times? How did the people live in the mountainous regions?  What does the earliest monumental architecture tell us about the nature of early societies of the region?  What does the use of pottery around 2000 BCE  tell us about the changing culture of South American societies?  How did coastal and highland peoples sustain themselves after 2000 BCE?

2. Focus Question:  How does the rise of Inca civilization illustrate both cultural adaptation and political expansionism?
How did Chavín culture spread?  What were the chief characteristics of Chavín, Nazca and Moche cultures?  For what were the Moche most noted?  What provided Tiwanaku with its economic base?  Why were the Huari apparently accepted by subject people without overt military domination?  Where was the Chimu Empire located and what was its fate?  How large was the Inca Empire?  How did the Incas enlarge their empire?  How did the Incas differ from the Aztecs in obtaining wealth from their conquered peoples?  What role did cloth and clothing have in Inca and other South American societies?  How many miles of road were in the Inca empire?
