WHAT IS "EUDAEMONISM? The view of human motivation known as "eudaemonism" (from the Greek word "eudaemonia" meaning "well-being" or "happiness") is the view that each person always is motivated to act is the way which he/she thinks will maximize his/her own "happiness" or "well-being"
It is certainly a cornerstone of Socrates' thought, and indeed of much Western ethical philosophizing.
But whether or not it is a true fact about the way people really are, is indeed a controversial matter.
If we grant it to Socrates in his Main Argument against Meletus, no matter how strange its conclusion (No one deliberately corrupts his associates.), is sound; its conclusion must therefore be true. If we are suspicious of Socrates' conclusion here, we may very well question this "eudaemonistic premiss."
