This is a proposed outline of the writing assignments for the southern women writers project. More details will be provided as we go along. The project will be worth 100 points, with each major portion worth 25 points.

[#1] Week 3 (Monday, February 3)
Select a writer from those collected in the Weaks and Perry anthology or one whose works we are reading in this class and post a short explanation on the Discussion Board about why you'd like to know more about her.

[#2]Week 5 (Monday, February 19) [25 pts.]
Identify at least three sources on the life of your writer--at least one of which should be a book or non-reference source; write a  brief (500-1000 words) biographical sketch of your writer including the major events of her life and writing career.

[#3]Week 8 (Monday, March 10) [25 pts.]

  • Compile a bibliography of at least ten sources, including at least one book, two articles and one internet resource; use either MLA or APA style.
  • Pose three questions about the historical contexts of your writer and/or one of her major texts.
[#4]Week 9 (Monday, March 17) [choose one][25pts.]
1) Select two journal articles from your bibliography, at least one of which is literary criticism. In comments of about 250-500 words each, summarize the main point of each essay and  explain how it is helpful in understanding a specfic text of your writer.
2) Annotate at least seven sources from your bibliography, providing a two or three sentence comment on the content of your source; include at least three works of literary criticism.

[#5]Week 11 (Monday, April 7) [25 pts.]
Context Report: answer one of the questions you posed in Week 8 [#3] as approved by me, commenting on the relevance of this issue or event in understanding your writer's work (600-1000 words).
