International Machaut Society
We've moved!
These pages have moved south from Vanderbilt, their original
host, to Loyola University New Orleans. As the new webmaster for the
International Machaut Society, I'd like publicly and enthusiastically
to thank Cynthia Cyrus for developing, maintaining, and hosting these
pages. I'll try to keep them up as well as I can, but the creative work
is all Cynthia's.
Please feel free to contact me with questions, comments,
reports of broken links, suggestions of new things to add, or anything
else.

Who are we?
The International Machaut Society is a not-for-profit
scholarly organization founded in 1985 and devoted to the study,
criticism, performance, research, and exchange of ideas related to all
aspects of the works of the poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut (ca.
1300-1377) and their manuscript and performance traditions.
Fields of inquiry fostered by the Society include, but are
not limited to, literary history and criticism; music history,
criticism, and theory; the performing arts; art history; and
codicology. Study and performance of works of other poets and composers
or of other performance and manuscript traditions are also included
within activities sponsored by the Society insofar as they contribute
significantly to study of the background, context, or influence of the
works of Machaut.
The Society encourages membership with the broadest possible
international representation and currently boasts members from almost
every continent. Any person may become a member of the International
Machaut Society upon payment of dues. Right
now we are unfortunately only able to accept U. S. funds, but we are
looking into ways to receive other currencies.
What we do
The Society meets annually at the International Congress
on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, MI. At this convention the
Society ordinarily sponsors several sessions of scholarly papers and
discussion, plus a business meeting and luncheon. For more information
on our plans for the next meeting, check here.
This year we will also sponsor two sessions at the
International Medieval Congress in Leeds; for more information see this page.
In addition to this web site, which includes a page of links to
other Machaut web sites, the Society publishes a newsletter
and sponsors the Sarah Jane
Williams Award, given every other year.
The Newsletter
Members receive an annual issue of Ymaginer, the
Newsletter of the International Machaut Society. Submit conference
news, abstracts, reviews, comments, letters to the editor, and notices
of Machaut papers, publications and performances to the Executive Secretary.
Sarah Jane Williams Award
The society offers the Sarah Jane Williams Award, a $500
prize in memory of the founder of the society. The award, given every
other year, is designed to promote the study, criticism, performance,
research, and exchange of ideas related to all aspects of the works of
Guillaume de Machaut. Applications are due by 1 March 2011 for
the next award. For further information, see the formal
announcement of this prize.
Announcement--We Win Prizes!
The IMS Web Site was awarded a Links2go "medieval music"
award in 2001. This award is a statistical measure of our
"connectedness." In other words, it is a measure of how many external
websites link to ours. At the time of the award, we were the third most
frequently cited site for Medieval Music on the World Wide Web.
In the past several years, we have also won several other
prizes. The IMS runs one of the few web sites to receive a Gloriana
Class Act award, awarded by Elizabeth
G. Melillo, Ph. D.. This award is given in recognition of valuable
content on WWW sites. Though design is also a consideration, the
criteria emphasize a contribution to the internet that is original, and
of artistic or intellectual significance.
The IMS also notes that it is the entry point for Machaut
research on the DMOZ
open directory project. As they describe it, "the Open Directory
Project's goal is to produce the most comprehensive directory of the
web, by relying on a vast army of volunteer editors." Their motto is
"humans do it better."
We were also one of the sites honored by the Triangle d'or
in the Liste de diffusion Formatic 2000.
Bibliographies and Abstracts
Thanks to the work of our members, the IMS now sponsors two
bibliographies: one by R. Barton Palmer on texts
and one by Kevin N. Moll on music.
We also provide a schedule and abstracts for recent papers
given at Society meetings in Kalamazoo and Leeds; see here for
details.
Finding materials by or about Machaut
The best single source for information about Machaut, his
manuscripts, and his works is Lawrence Earp, Guillaume de Machaut:
A Guide to Research, Garland Composer Resource Manuals 36 (New York
and London: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1995). (Note that Garland books
are now handled through Routledge Publishers.)
A number of the narrative poems have been edited and
translated; many of those are also available through Garland/Routledge.
See Barton Palmer's bibliography
for details.
Machaut's music exists in two editions. The better one is
Friedrich Ludwig's, which is unfortunately out of print, but Leo
Schrade's is available in five reprint volumes. Éditions de
l'Oiseau-Lyre is currently offering those five reprint volumes for 175
euros; single volumes are also available. Consult their web site for details.
We aren't able to maintain a discography of Machaut's works,
though we heartily recommend the one in Larry Earp's book as a starting
point. We're glad to hear about recordings devoted wholly or largely to
Machaut's works, and we may highlight some on this page from time to
time, but not in a systematic way.
To join us:
Dues are currently $10.00 (U.S.) per year (or $5 for the
unemployed); at this point we are unfortunately only able to accept U.
S. funds. Checks for dues should be made payable to The
International Machaut Society. You may pay at the annual Business
Meeting at the International Medieval Congress, Kalamazoo, Michigan, in
May, or send your check to the Executive Secretary.
Please include your name, your snail-mail address, e-mail address (and
an indication of whether or not you want to be listed on the on-line
page of members), and your institutional affiliation if appropriate.
