In the fall of 1885, seven young women came together to form a musical society at
Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. They wanted to create an organization
that would provide close companionship and support to its members. A friend and
associate, James G. Cambell, an undergraduate member of Beta Theta Pi,
suggested that they form a fraternity. They believed that this kind of group
would benefit the students, the university, and the musical arts.
Α - Alpha - The first letter of the Greek alphabet, because we are the first fraternity of the school of music.
χ - Kai - meaning "and", added to form the beginning and the end. "Kai" was soon changed to "Chi".
Ω - Omega - The founders thought they might also be founding the last such fraternity.
