BEOWULF---Read or Sung Out Loud

Having students hear what we think BEOWULF sounded like is magical because hearing Old English unlocks a world of possibilities. The sites listed will download an audio file (often wav) which should automatically play on your computer's default audioplayer. In other words, you click, and the computer does the rest. If it does not work, the site will give you directions for getting it to work. If not, try another site or get one of your students to help :).

http://www.engl.virginia.edu/OE/Beowulf.Readings/Beowulf.Readings.html This site offers a chance to hear selections from BEOWULF, like Prologue, Grendel's Approach to Herot, and even Beowulf's Funeral.  Since you can opt to use a WAV file, your computer should be able to play these files for you with  little problem.

http://english.berkeley.edu/classes/f99/45a/Niles/beowulf.html This site may be a bit trickier to get to work, but it is worth it.  Also, the selection is smaller.

http://ishi.berkeley.edu/history155/manuscripts/index.html This site was under heavy construction, but it might work by now.
