Sexual Assault Awareness Quilt project

quilt

The Sexual Assault Awareness Quilt is a visual display to remember women who have been victimized by violence and to bring awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault to the Loyola and New Orleans communities. It is intended to be a growing legacy that violence against women will no longer be kept a secret. People often feel alone in dealing with sexual violence.  However, when the Awareness Quilt is displayed, it will provide everyone the opportunity to see how many lives have been affected.

The Sexual Assault Awareness Quilt will be hung on campus each year during events such as the annual Take Back the Night March and Sexual Assault Awareness week. We will add to the quilt each year, giving everyone the opportunity to design quilt squares that relate to their own experience or that of someone close to them.

If you want to be part of this project

This year we will be hosting our first mini Quilt-A-Thon to gather together an additional panel for the quilt. We will have an information table at the Danna Center on Monday, September 12th, followed by a 'make a quilt square' event at the Wolf Den conference room between 12-2pm,  Wednesday, September 13th.  The quilt will be carried during the annual Women and Men Take Back The Night rally and march on October 6, 2005. See link for more details.

Quilt squares can be designed by         individuals in honor or remembrance of  someone they know who has been affected by sexual violence or by campus departments or organizations. This is an excellent programming opportunity for Resident Advisors and campus organizations.  Those who do not know anyone who has been assaulted can still decorate a square to show their support for all survivors in our society.

q2

Instructions for designing your own square:  Designing squares should be a fun and creative opportunity and really does not require any special artistic or sewing skills. You just pick up a square, and using any materials that you can decorate cloth with, create a square showing your support of sexual assault victims/survivors and your commitment to ending sexual violence. Leave a border around your design for sewing.

If you or your organization or department would like to take a part in developing this quilt, please pick up a square at the Women’s Resource Center, 103 Mercy Hall.  We're also looking for volunteers who want to help with this project. If you have an interest in helping sew the quilt together or if you have questions, please contact Jen Brackett at ext 3860 or email at jabracke@loyno.edu.
