The Two Year Old Room accepts children from 2 - 3 years of age. There are two full-time teachers with the two year olds. Work study students and student assistants aid the teachers as their schedules permit. The two year olds have a combination of indoor and outside playtime as the weather permits. The teachers interact with the children daily, both individually while the children are outside, or playing in centers, or performing daily routines such as meals and toileting as well as during small and large group activities. Much care and attention is provided to each child as they progress through this exciting stage of development when they are asserting their independence. The teachers provide the two year olds with clear, fair limits and guide them to make the right choices in a consistent manner. Children are encouraged to use their words instead of their hands and a great deal of importance is placed on the development of social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and being respectful of other's feelings.
The two year olds share classroom space with the Three Year Old class. The two classes have opposite schedules in regards to outside time, which allows each group to enjoy time in the classroom with only one class. The children are free to choose from the following centers: dramatic play, blocks, art, felt board, magnet board, legos, manipulatives, book/cozy area, and table activities. They have a wide variety of materials to choose from, such as: blocks, block people, cars and trucks, dress-up clothes, baby dolls, soft toys, puppets, play food and dishes, books, science materials, manipulatives that encourage math skills such as measuring, counting, number recognition, etc., puzzles, duplos, playdough, chalkboards, dry erase boards, paper and drawing materials, etc. The two year olds participate in cooking projects at least once a month and enjoy going on walks around campus. During their daily group time, they read books and sing songs relating to the theme of the month.
Toilet learning becomes an important factor in the Two Year Old class. Children are encouraged to use the toilet during bathroom times when children are washing hands. Successes are celebrated and as the children progress and have fewer wet diapers and more attempts at toileting are successful, teachers speak with the parents about the transition to underwear. After spending a weekend at home in underwear, the children come to school on Monday morning in underwear. Accidents are expected and treated without shame or negativity.
