Thinking Critically, Acting Justly:
Aiming for a Better World

Loyola men’s basketball player and economics major Mario Faranda (seen here with Loyola Basketball Camp attendee Aaron Wiseman) is scoring both on and off the basketball court. A sophomore from Chiavari, Italy, Mario appeared in all 17 games this past season for the Loyola Wolfpack. He averaged 11.1 points per game, while shooting 52.8 percent from the field, and he grabbed a team high of 6.3 rebounds per contest.
But it is Mario’s commitment to helping others that sets him apart. In the days after Hurricane Katrina, Mario returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and assisted with relief efforts. As a result, he was one of seven New Orleans-area student athletes recognized by Coca-Cola’s Community All-American Awards Program for their charitable work.
“We are very proud of the recognition that Mario received from this award. He was one of our first scholarship athletes and is a true campus leader. Mario exemplifies the Ignatian way of living one’s life for others,” said Loyola athletic director/head basketball coach Dr. Michael F. Giorlando.
