Thinking Critically, Acting Justly:
Bringing justice through action
During her time at Loyola College of Law, Lorelie Papel, L’07, put her future prosecution career into motion by volunteering with the New Orleans District Attorney’s Office in the Homicide Unit and then later working pro bono in a trial section through Loyola’s Prosecution Clinic, lending a much-needed helping hand to the struggling legal system. While there, Lorelie worked under Loyola College of Law alumni Matthew Whitworth, L’03, assistant district attorney currently serving in the Violent Offender Unit, and Margaret Parker, L’04, assistant district attorney currently serving in the Homicide Unit. She gathered evidence, argued motions, contacted victims regarding their cases, and even tried cases, allowing her to gain valuable hands-on working experience while making a difference in the New Orleans community.
“Every part of the experience was educational and had something important to offer,” says Lorelie. “Most importantly, I learned that the criminal justice system is an imperfect creature that we have to deal with as best we can in bringing justice to both defendants and victims of crime. It’s not an easy task, but I know it’s an important one.”![]() |
