Thinking Critically, Acting Justly:

Striking a chord with a living legend

Behind every great student is a great teacher. Meghan Swartz knows that well. The Graphic design/music double major received a one-on-one session with Loyola alumnus Ellis Marsalis (G’86), who joined the College of Music and Fine Arts Artist-in-Residence Program in 2003 and serves not only in the Jazz Studies Program, but also in the Music Industry Studies Program. Marsalis is the premier modern jazz pianist of New Orleans. He is also, literally and figuratively, the father of a generation of contemporary jazz musicians who are considered the international leaders of the current jazz scene.

The Artist-in-Residence Program in the College of Music and Fine Arts is just one of the distinguishing features of the college. The College of Music and Fine Arts prides itself on the relationship between its faculty and students and its comprehensive array of opportunities for performances, exhibits, and ensembles which afford students the opportunity to present their work on a consistent basis. The low ratio of students to faculty enables a strong emphasis on individual student attention and individual instruction.
