Work/Study Employment Opportunity

Loyola’s Writing Across the Curriculum centers are staffed by Loyola students.

WAC hires and trains motivated students who are willing to learn how to be good peer writing tutors. WAC is open seven days a week, so flexible work times are available. Work-study tutors who are awarded 142 Work/Study hours per semester usually work 10-to-12 hours a week. Although most of our tutors are involved in the work-study program, WAC does have a few student assistant positions available, which are awarded on a competitive basis.

Typical Responsibilities for WAC tutors

  • assist Loyola students who need writing help,
  • attend training workshops each semester,
  • greet visitors and callers,
  • provide computer assistance,
  • complete lab report forms, and
  • conduct library research.

Educational Benefits

In the process of helping others improve their writing, WAC tutors

  • extend and strengthen their own writing abilities,
  • earn one hour of course credit for participating in the tutor training program,
  • become familiar with a range of computer skills, and
  • develop a professional work ethic.

With 26 PCs available in its lab, WAC offers tutors training in Microsoft Office 2000 applications (Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point), Netscape Navigator/Composer, Microsoft Publisher, and FrontPage.

Selection Criteria

Writing Across the Curriculum is looking for academically qualified students who possess: strong writing abilities, some knowledge of computers, ability to word process, excellent communication skills, a willingness to work flexible hours, and a willingness to learn how to be a good peer tutor.
