Try these other OWLs that are based at other colleges and universities and are willing to offer advice to the general public.
Here are some of our favorites:

  • Purdue University OWL
    Get everything you need from the most thorough list of online style handouts and materials from Purdue's OWL. This includes General Writing Concerns, English as a Second Language, Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling, Research/Documenting Sources, Professional Writing, etc. Purdue also provides a limited email editing and suggestion service.
  • University of Kansas
    KU's Writing Guide is a gold mine of information, with topics including Academic Essays, Avoiding Plagiarism, Critical Thinking, Reading, and Study Strategies, Theses and Dissertations, Grammar and Usage, Writing your Research, Personal and Professional Writing, Writing in your Courses, and much more.
  • University of Richmond Writing Center and WAC Program
    University of Richmond provides information on starting papers, brainstorming for ideas, forming thesis statements, writing effective conclusions, adding action and clarity to writing concise papers.
  • George Mason University Writing Center
    This is a comprehensive website with unique online workshops concerning research papers, business writing, writing for the social sciences and more. Highly recommended.
  • University of Maine Writing Center Online
    The University of Maine has a great list of foreign language dictionaries and English as a second language resources.
  • Trinity College Writing Center
    Trinity offers the links to Writing Tips, Revising and Editing Q & A's, Essay Writing Tips and Pitfalls. The website also offers an organized list of Writer's Desk References and Documentation and Citation Guides.
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison Online Writing Center
    UW gives help in getting started, drafting, revising, and proofreading, in literary analyses, lab reports, and more, in avoiding common mistakes, in writing more clearly and persuasively, and in avoiding plagiarism.
  • Bowling Green State University
    BGSU Writing Lab Online Help Pages is neatly a list of organized links and handouts with topics ranging from writing proper introductions to citation formats.
  • University of Michigan OWL
    UM's OWL has links to plenty of grammar and writing help for a student in need.
  • Washington State University OWL
    Wash U offers useful resources relevant to Computers and Writing, as well as links for help with English as a Second Language, General, Mechanics/Punctuation, and Publishing Your Writing.
  • Duke University Writing Studio
    Duke's resources include a "Ten Favorite Sites" page and a "Handouts and Links" page, with topics including Academic Writing: General Information, Editing and Revision: Usage and Grammar, Prewriting, Working with Sources, Drafting, and Revision.
