Become A Visual Arts Student
Requirements and Deadlines:
The 2008-2009 Audition/Interview dates are:
- December 6, 2008
- January 24, 2009
- February 28, 2009
To schedule your portfolio review on one of these dates, you must fill out a visual arts audition/interview/portfolio application.
Freshman Students
Visual art portfolios are required for freshman visual arts scholarship consideration. A freshman student must also be granted admission to the university prior to scholarship consideration. Freshman students must be admitted and submit portfolios by the final deadline date of February 28, 2009.
Transfer Students
Transfer students are asked to complete all application materials and are required to submit a portfolio for admission and scholarship consideration. Transfer students are encouraged to submit all application materials and a portfolio by the final deadline date of February 28, 2009. If transfer students submit application materials and the portfolio after this date, the materials will be reviewed on a rolling basis for admission consideration. If funding is still available, admitted applicants will be given scholarship consideration at that time.
Portfolio Content Requirements
Portfolios should contain 10-20 examples of two and three dimensional artwork in SLIDE FORMAT or MAC COMPATIBLE CD OR DVD OR 35MM SLIDES. DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL CD, DVD OR SLIDES OR ORIGINAL WORKS OF ART. Slides should be numbered and labeled with the artist's name; the title, media, dimensions, and date of the artwork; and an arrow indicating the top of the work. Slides should be submitted in a transparent slide sheet. A separate sheet listing slide numbers or of a clear outline of work on CD or DVD. Additional clarifying material may accompany the portfolio i.e. Was this a class assigned project? Was this an independently created work of art? The portfolio must include applicant's name, social security number, address, and telephone number and the semester for which application has been made.
A complete portfolio submission will include the following:
- 10-20 slides in a transparent slide sheet and/or a Macintosh compatible CD or DVD
- Slide List or CD/DVD outline of contents
- *Cover letter stating intent
- **A one page typed artist's statement
- Self addressed stamp envelope for portfolio return
*Please note in your cover letter which program you are applying to including one of the following: BA in studio art, BFA in studio art, or BA in graphics design.
**Please note your artist’s statement is limited to one page. Questions to consider for the statement include the following:
- Why do you want to become a visual artist?
- Regarding your art work, where do 'ideas' or images come from?
- What media or materials do you work best with? (paint, pencil, clay, printmaking, photography, sculpture, computer, other?)
- Does the history of art, specific artists, or periods in art history influence or inspire you?
- How do you determine when an art work is finished?
