Frequently Asked Questions...
1. I'm not Catholic. Do you offer anything for me?
Absolutely! All of our programming is open to students who are not Catholic, but many programs are designed specifically to meet the needs of students from various faiths. You may want to visit our Communities page or our Interfaith programming page. The chaplain who coordinates most interfaith programming is George Gallien, and he can be reached at 864-7921 or by email at grgallie@loyno.edu.
2. What kinds of retreats do you have?
Many! We offer full weekend retreats, days and evenings of reflection and other opportunities to "get away" for some silence and reflection.. Each spring and fall, we offer a large student-led retreat and the opportunity for a silent Ignatian retreat (a great experience!) This year, we are excited to offer a brand new "Busy-Persons Retreat" which is designed for people who can't fit a weekend away into their schedule, but want to learn more about Ignatian spirituality. For more information on all our retreats, visit our Retreats page or contact Laura Catherine Gallien at 865-3225 or by email at lgallien@loyno.edu.
3. I have some questions about faith, but I don't want to be pressured into anything. Who should I see?
All of our university chaplains and resident chaplains are trained to offer spiritual direction and pastoral counseling. We respect that young adults (and all people!) are often at a place in their lives where they are questioning their faith or the faith of others. At the heart of Ignatian Spirituality is an open mind, and the process of discernment. During your time at Loyola, you are likely to hear the phrase "Finding God in All Things," which suggests this very attitude! We know that it takes a lot of trust to explore questions of faith and we take our reponsibility seriously to journey WITH you, not tell you where to go. If you would like to ask any questions about faith, contact any member of the University Ministry staff or any Resident Chaplains (who are available in each residence hall.)
4. When do you have mass and confessions?
Sunday masses are offered in Ignatius Chapel at 10:30 and 9:00 pm; Holy Name
of Jesus Church also offers a 6:00 pm mass on Sunday.
Daily masses are held in Ignatius Chapel every weekday at noon and Monday through
Thursday at 9:00 pm.
Confessions are available periodically in Ignatius Chapel and by appointment
with any priest.
You can sign up to be a lector, musician or extraordinary minister of communion
with Fr. Jim Caime by caling 865-3595 or emailing him at jncaime@loyno.edu.
5. I missed getting confirmed in high school or junior high. Can I do that here?
Sure! We offer confirmation at least once per year (sometimes twice). For more information, visit our Confirmation page or contact Kurt Bindewald at 865-3226.
6. I used to do community service in high school. How can I get involved with that at Loyola?
We offer many community service opportunities through the Loyola University Community Action Program, which runs about ten programs every year. We also have opportunities for immersion trips during Mardi Gras and during the summer (and we are working to offer more!) Some of our small faith communities are involved in specific community service programs as well. During Orientation, you might want to participate in "Into the Streets," a one day comunity service program on the Saturday of Catch the Action weekend. For more information, contact Rick Yelton at 865-2141 or email him at hryelton@loyno.edu.
