Welcome Message from the Director

"Father Twomey never wavered his commitment to peace through justice, nor shall the Center that bears his name."

Twomey Center for Peace through Justice Director Ted Quant

Welcome Message From the Director:

Welcome to our new Twomey Center website. We are making changes to the website to make it more central to our mission to "shape social consciousness and take action on critical issues."

In the next period of time you will see this transformation as we add newsletters and action alerts from Bread for the World and the Global Network for Justice updating information for advocacy on hunger and poverty issues.

It will include research and analysis through our Blueprint for Social justice and links to the works of colleagues and collaborators. You will also share ideas, lessons, and tools for practicing and teaching conflict transformation, mediation, dialogue skills, and youth leadership development.

We will continue the vision of Father Louis J. Twomey who founded the Institute of Human Relations at Loyola University in 1947. His vision was to implement the social justice teachings of the Catholic Church in labor and race relations and "to create a society in which the dignity of the human person is acknowledged, protected and respected."

He put his commitment into practice when he raised the banner of workers' rights and racial justice in the heart of the segregated, anti-union South.

He challenged racism and taught that race and labor are “two sides of the same coin,” and that there can’t be justice for one without justice for all. He modeled respect for the human dignity of every person from the classroom to the picket line.

These core values and the persistent issues of human rights violations, economic and social injustices, racism and other oppressions, still define the work of the institute renamed in his honor.

We continue that tradition of education and action through our Twomey Training Center, Bread for World, Global Network for Justice, Blueprint for Social Justice, Global Facilitators Service Corp New Orleans Network, and our conflict resolution and mediation work and through our website.

We will continue this unbroken history into the future and we invite you to join us!
