Loyola Summer Day-Camp
Article By Zach Bracey, Assistant Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Wellness
Every summer, Loyola Athletics & Wellness hosts a successful and robust Summer Day Camp for kids 5 -13 years old. The program was started over 20 years ago and attracts children from local primary schools. The camp allows the children to play and explore in a variety of sports, recreational games, arts and crafts, and swimming. The camp runs six weeks during the summer and takes place in the University Sports Complex and on the Residential Quad.
The goal of camp is to provide a fun-filled and rewarding experience for the campers, counselors, and counselors in training (CITs). It is also a great way to positively connect young students to the university.
Leading all of the campers this summer was our staff of 18-22 counselors, many of whom are students at Loyola, while others come from different universities around the country. Not only are they leaders for the campers, but they also act as mentors for our adolescent CITs. Many have developed a connection with the university or the camp, and return year after year.
The CIT program is designed for children 14-17 years old. Most of them have previously attended the camp, and are excited for the chance to come back and volunteer. In turn, it is a great way to connect them with the university. Many of the CITs continue on to become counselors when they become old enough.
