Student Affairs, in partnership with Ochsner Healthcare System, recently welcomed three new staff members to the team who provide quality medical services to the Loyola community at Student Health Services: Leah Bowers, NP; Rebekah Eustler, BSN; and most recently Pam Agregaard, Special Services Coordinator. In addition to primary care treatment, Student Health Services offers a variety of services to meet the needs of the campus including but not limited to immunizations, laboratory work, and educational programming. As the Student Health Services staff completes their first full academic year of work, they reflect on what they've enjoyed and what they want students to know.
What do you like best about your work at Student Health Services?
Leah: Providing care for our students including those who have residence out of state and do not have a local primary care provider.
Rebekah: Being able to teach students and educate them on topics related to health awareness and prevention.
What would you like students to know about Student Health Services?
Leah: We are staffed by Ochsner Hospital and employ a full time registered nurse and nurse practitioner. We provide a variety of healthcare services at Student Health such as responding to emergencies on campus, STD testing, laboratory and radiology studies, yearly pap smears, and referrals to specialists when needed. There is no charge for visits to Student Health. Our website includes all of the services we offer and we are in the process of updating our links to provide more information.
What significant changes have you accomplished at Student Health Services since January 2009?
Rebekah: Since the beginning of the year, we have made many changes. As Ochsner employees, we can offer students access to excellent healthcare and provide referrals to Ochsner specialists, if needed. We are making positive strides toward increased use of technology in our work. We have also updated all of our equipment including emergency supplies and we recently added an AED machine (Automated External Defibrillator) which will serve the campus during cardiac emergencies.
What are Student Health Services' goals for academic year 2009-2010?
Leah: We hope to increase our visibility on campus and to host seminars on specific health topics that are of interest to the Loyola community. We are also interested in establishing positive relationships with student groups to make certain that we are meeting the needs of our students.
