List of Accomplishments 2007-2008

Co-Curricular Programming/Danna Student Center

Programming

  • The University Programming Board programmed 40 events averaging two programs per week.
  • Collaboration with the Latin American Studies department and the University Programming Board offered over nine movies for the Latin American Film Festival.
  • Collaboration with UPB, Dr. Bob Thomas and LUCAP offered a program on sustainability, recycling and reducing carbon footprints.
  • Collaboration with Loyola Dining Services, the University Programming Board hosted 6 events.
  • 400 students attended the Greek Welcome Back BBQ on September 26, 2008.
  • 250 students attended the Greek Halloween BBQ & Pep Rally on October 31, 2008.
  • HEAL committee offered alcohol awareness, tobacco, and healthy behaviors programs.
  • Co-sponsoring Peace Week Committee and Women’s Center keynote speaker Barbara Martinez Jitner on Wednesday, March 25, 2009.
  • Hosted an Integrity Initiative workshop in residence in collaboration with SGA Judicial Branch and Residential Life student staff.
  • Implemented the use of the “3rd Millennium Classroom” online educational programs & sanctions:  Alcohol Wise, Under the Influence, and Marijuana 101.
  • In collaboration with Career Services, created the First Year Experience Resource Guide that provides common definitions, reviews common first-year components, examines model programs, and summarizes programs at aspirational institutions and 27 other Jesuit colleges and universities.

New Student Orientation

  • Loyola Lagniappe hosted 123 students in June and 125 students in July. Surveys indicate 93-98% of both groups feel prepared to begin Loyola in August.
  • 703 first year students participated in Wolfpack Welcome orientation.  88% felt prepared for their first semester.
  • 150 students and parents attended Wolfpack Welcome commuter program.
  • 600 parents participated in Wolfpack Welcome for parents. 80% responded they left Loyola with their questions answered.
  • Approximately 34% of first year parents is engaged with Goalquest with over 700 articles read.
  • Initiated a Facebook.com group as a way to engage first year students before their arrival on campus, which was accepted as a poster session at the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) conference.

StrengthsQuest

  • 20 hours of Strengths Trainer training sessions.
  • 2 hour strengths-based student development presentation to Student Affairs staff.
  • Parent orientation sessions on StrengthsQuest.
  • 729 undergraduate students administered StrengthsQuest during orientation.

Jesuit-Values Leadership Lecture Series

  • Established conversations with University Ministry & Mission for Jesuit-values leadership  lecture series; however, no programs were presented in Fall 08.

Greek Life Development

  • Increased Panhellenic recruitment enrollment by 11%.  Increased non-Anglican Panhellenic potential new members from 1 person to 11 people.
  • Hosted Greek Life In-Service. Developed advising and consultant relationship with Fr. Charlie LaTour who has presented findings report.
  • Increased partnership with Greek alumni by supporting Alumni Affairs in the reestablishment of Greek Alumni Programming Committee.

Leadership Development

  • Planning for Spring 09 Student Leader Initiative Conference.
  • Successful implementation of the Cardoner Leadership Fellows, LC.
  • Trained 40 student Krewe leaders and three Krewe Captains during the spring semester and summer about campus resources, icebreakers, group facilitation, and communication.

Complete Danna Center Renovation

  • Renovation completed in August 2008 with exception of build-out of bookstore retail space.
  • Four One Loyola pieces created and aired.
  • Renovation Celebration hosted on October 9, 2008.
  • Renewed and reinvigorated a positive working relationship with Physical Plant.
  • Increased communication and cooperation with WFF in terms of cleaning standards and room sets.

Bookstore Request for Proposal

  • Bookstore RFP will be released in January 2009.
  • New Manager was hired in November 2008.

Cardoner Leadership Fellows

  • Implementation of Social Challenge Project process with Cardoner fellows.
  • Creation of Cardoner Leadership Fellows Advisory Board which meets monthly.
  • 6 hours of mentoring meetings with Puja Cuddapah, Cardoner LC resident assistant.
  • Monthly leadership dinners university administrators and Cardoner fellows.
  • Increased collaboration (weekly meetings) with Residential Life for Cardoner LC.

 

Counseling and Health Center

Student Services

  • Current supervision of the University Counseling Center (UCC) and Student Health Services (SHS) under the administrative direction of Dr. Alicia Bourque.
  • Partnership with Ochsner Healthcare System currently provides medical services at SHS for the Loyola community with a full-time staff comprised of a Family Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse and Business Manager (bilingual:  Spanish and English).
    - Contracted with Ochsner Healthcare System to provide emergency services to Whelan - Child Care Center.
  • Current Director for the Loyola University Nurse Practitioner program serving as alternate Family Nurse Practitioner in the absence of the Ochsner Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current Loyola University School of Nursing students engaging in clinical work at SHS.
  • In an effort to better meet the demand for services in the UCC, consolidated part-time positions and acquired a grant in order to fund 2, full-time staff counselor positions.
  • Staff counselors developed handout for faculty and staff regarding how and when to refer for mental health emergencies and options for sexual assault victim response.

Counseling/Health Programming

  • Hosted Tobacco Free Living promotion event at the University Sports Complex during a volleyball game in November 2008.
  • Purchased radio time for Tobacco Free Living advertising during all women’s and men’s basketball airings for the AY 2008-2009.
  • Purchased a Tobacco Free Living promotional banner which is to be displayed at the University Sports Complex for the AY 2008-2009.
  • Collaborated with the Athletics and Wellness representative on the HEAL committee:
    - Take Back the Night.
    - Great American Smoke Out.
    - Campus Crawl as part of the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.
  • Ochsner Healthcare professionals presented a total of 5 health and wellness programs for the Loyola community.

Co-Curricular Programming

  • Through a combination of staff counselor presentations in the residence halls and HEAL committee sponsored events (representatives from Residential Life, Athletics and Wellness, Dining Services and Co-Curricular Programs) provided approximately 25 organized, developmentally appropriate health promotion and education programs (exceeded goal of 20 for 08-09).
  • Designated staff counselor to serve on Orientation planning committee as UCC representative.
  • Collaborated on design of One Loyola presentation and Clothesline Project during the Take Back the Night event.
  • Provided support and programming with Mass and Pancakes event.
  • Guest lectured for 2 classes on assessment and counseling theory for counseling graduate department.

 

Athletics and Wellness

Athletic/Wellness Programming

  • Increase to 20 group exercise classes each week.
  • Continued to offer free chair massage during mid terms and finals.
  • Organized campus participation in Corporate Cup December 7.
  • Four flat screen TVs and cardio theatre set up in cardio workout area.
  • All male student athletes attended a sexual aggression seminar in October.
  • Building managers and work study staff work with game management team for athletic events.
  • Invited faculty and staff to participate in women’s basketball ring ceremony.
  • Hosted a Tobacco Free Living night at a volleyball game.
  • Updated the community of athletic achievement through press releases on the University web site, NOLA.com blog, local newspapers, local TVsports programs and postings on campus.
  • Pitched several feature stories to on campus and off campus media.
  • Continued radio broadcast of men’s basketball games on WGSO 990 AM.
  • Student athlete assessment tool administered via the internet.
  • Student athlete biographical information collected via the internet.
  • The men’s basketball team assisted in setting up and serving Thanksgiving dinner to homeless men and recovering alcoholics at Bridge House and volunteered for the Hornet’s  “Achieve to Read” program at local public school.
  • An Intramural men’s flag football team and co-rec volleyball team participated in the LCIRSA state tournament in the Fall.
  • Campus intramural officials clinics were more in-depth.
  • “St. Ignatius Spirit Band” plays at men’s and women’s basketball games.
  • Hired qualified cheerleading coach.
  • Student athletes participated in Take Back the Night.
  • Athletic staff spoke to classes in the College of Business.
  • Student interns continue to plan and execute tasks related to media relations, marketing and promotions.
  • Baseball team assisted with set up for a post race event for the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure.
  • Volleyball team visited with children and their families at Ronald McDonald House.
  • Worked with admissions to include talent aid for student athletes in financial aid packages.
  • PackBacker brochure produced and mailed to athletic donors.
  • Hall of Fame class elected with the largest turnout for a committee meeting in several years.
  • Cultivated and secured new donors with the new department development officer.
  • All student athletes attended “Race Relations” lecture presented by Mohammed Ali Hall of Fame, sponsored by Tulane Law Clinic.
  • Successful partnership of Athletics and Wellness and Counseling Center via the HEAL committee and Wolfpack Wellness.
  • Student Athletes assisted with student move-in at the Residence Halls.
  • Fostered relationships between Career Development Center and Athletic and Wellness sponsors/ alums.

Co-Curricular Programming

  • Staff from the department of Athletics and Wellness assisted with Strengths Quest presentations during orientation as well as with the Danna Grand Reopening.
  • Two staff members from A & W serve on the orientation planning committee.
  • Provided massage therapist to offer chair massages during finals pancake event.
  • Collaborated with Dining Services, Alumni Affairs, Residential Life, Co-curricular programs, UPB, and SGA in the Annual Tulane Pep Rally.
  • Staff from the department of Athletics and Wellness led book discussions of Mountains Beyond Mountains for first year students during orientation.

 

Career Development Center

Program Advancements

  • Hired Tamara Baker as Associate Director for Career Planning, bringing six years of in-depth career development and student affairs experience to the team.
  • Promoted Brian Creel to Manager of Recruiting Services bringing the enthusiasm of an alumnus and a technology master to the team.
  • Conducted 81 distinct career development programs ranging from workshops on resume writing to career fairs; posted 261 new internships and jobs, and conducted over 500 individual appointments.
  • Launched EMPLOYOLA, hosting 14 EMPLOYOLA teach-ins across campus.
  • Launched two new virtual career development tools – CareerBeam and CareerShift.
  • Partnered with 14 individual faculty members across all four undergraduate colleges to integrate career development material and activities into their courses.  Partnerships took place in biology, business, history, music education, music therapy, political science, psychology, sociology, and theatre arts.
  • Partnered with Academic Support Services to provide career and major exploration workshops and assessments for students receiving their services.
  • Joined a planning team within the College of Business to design a four-year career development curriculum to launch fall 2009.
  • Partnered with the Office of Mission and Identity to host Careers in Social Justice panel during Loyola Week
  • Partnered with the Associate Deans Office of the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences to provide career counseling to students readmitted to the College.
  • Designed and wrote a new CDC web site for launch in spring 2009.
  • Embraced the use of the new Danna Center LearnLab to transform instructional delivery.
  • Gained approval by the Associate Deans Council for the continuation of the Washington Center Internship program and initiation of the Disney College program with the Director of the CDC to serve as the campus coordinator for both programs.
  • Initiated partnership with the Black Student Union (BSU) to deliver targeted career development programming to their constituents.
  • Refined the design and release of the centers bi-weekly newsletter.
  • Became a sponsor of the Athletics program with the purchase and mounting of an EMPLOYOLA banner in the Den.

Co-Curricular Programming

  • Tamara Baker served as a Strengths Quest facilitator during Wolfpack Welcome.
  • Represented on the Orientation Planning Committee.
  • Designed and hosted the introductory tour of the Danna Center LearnLab for the October Danna Center Celebration Day.

Residential Living Initiatives

  • All CDC participated in Open Doors.
  • Tamara Baker provided a comprehensive program on vocational assessment for the Psychology Learning Community and conducted individual follow-up appointments with its members.
  • Tamara Baker presented an orientation to the CDC program in Carrollton Hall.
  • A plan to visit every upper-class student living in residence prior to Fall Career Fair was cancelled due to suspension of operations during Hurricane Gustav.
  • Tamara Baker co-created a resource guide of sample first year experience programs across the Jesuit collegiate community, at Loyola’s declared aspiration schools, and at Wagner and Elon Colleges to assist the Loyola community in understanding the scope of first year experience programs:
    - Tamara Baker and Roberta Kaskel both serve on the new First Year Experience Committee.

 

Residential Life

Improvements to Student Services and Facilities

  • Increased Resident Assistant programs targeting social networking based the care of the person theme model.
  • Residence Learning Community Initiative- which is the vision of  what the lounges and entryways could be was presented to the AA/SA BOT to demonstrate the divisional commitment to invigorate the living experience for students.
  • Addition of the following Learning Communities for 2009-2010:
    - Faith/Justice.
    - Psychology.
    - Writing & Literature.
    - Women’s Initiatives for Learning & Leading (WILL).
  • Development and implementation of the comprehensive programming calendar for the fall and spring.

Co-Curricular Programming

  • Partnership with Co-Curricular department in defining and implementing seamless co-curricular programming for '08-09.
  • AD Take Back the Night Committee membership and departmental support.
  • Pancake Mass Associate Director & AD’s.

Health/Wellness Programming
