Loyola University Hurricane Guidelines for Students
Student Personal Evacuation Plan:
All Loyola students are required to file a Personal Evacuation Plan, indicating an evacuation location and emergency contact information, through their LORA account. Students must share that plan and how they can be contacted with their families. Evacuation plans should include having an out-of-town relative or friend serve as a contact. It is the responsibility of students to enact their personal evacuation plan. The university will have limited access to student contact information during the evacuation.
Stay Informed:
Official communications from the university will be posted on the website, www.loyno.edu .
Loyola’s emergency website: www.emergency.loyno.edu
Loyola Emergency Line: 504-865-2186
Storm/Evacuation Preparation:
Students are responsible for preparing their room, apartment or house for evacuation. This includes clearing refrigerators, locking doors and windows, and unplugging all electronic equipment. Students should plan to take their passports, important papers, computers, books, (instruments if possible), prescription medicines, blanket, pillow, sleeping bag, batteries, and clothing for three days. Have cash on hand, as well. Also, students should be sure their vehicle is ready for evacuation by fueling up early, checking tires and spares, as well as the battery. Students must log into Blackboard for class assignments within 48 hours.
Evacuation Information:
Students are not allowed to remain on Loyola's campus, including residence halls, when an evacuation is ordered. Students should make transportation and lodging arrangements so they will be safely outside the storm area.
The university will only evacuate special needs students and those with extenuating circumstances. For those students absolutely unable to comply, such as international students, Loyola has a temporary student shelter with very limited space. These students will be bused to St. Michael the Archangel Diocesan High School, 17521 Monitor Ave., Baton Rouge, LA. Residential Life staff, led by Director Robbie Reed, will accompany students and remain with them until it is safe to return to campus, or until they make other arrangements in the event of an extended evacuation.
The departure date and time will be announced both on the Loyola website and at residential hall meetings when the decision to evacuate has been made. The designated loading area is behind Buddig Hall on the North Road in front of the Sports-plex.
Students needing transportation to the airport, bus station, or train, can contact University Police (504-865-3434) for a shuttle service.
Important note: If the City of New Orleans initiates its City-Assisted Evacuation Plan, students must be aware that rail and bus transportation will be utilized by city emergency personnel to evacuate citizens who have no other means of leaving the metropolitan area. In addition, Louis Armstrong International Airport will require an airline ticket or itinerary to access the airport. It is strongly recommended that students develop personal evacuation plans that do not rely on bus or rail transportation, and purchase airline tickets PRIOR to arrival at the airport.

Sheltering Tips:
Remember the Loyola University campus is not a shelter, and NO students, faculty, staff will be allowed to remain on campus during an evacuation. Use your pre-arranged emergency plan. The following are sheltering tips for students:
- Offer a ride or sheltering options to other students who need transportation.
- Choose a sheltering option far inland and north of Interstate 12.
- Go to a relative, faculty, staff, classmate or friend’s house outside of the storm area.
- Make reservations outside the storm area at a hotel or motel.
Remember to tell someone in your family where you are going, and contact them when you get there. Consult www.loyno.edu on a daily basis for updates and for information about returning to campus.
