Wilson Charter School

Andrew H. Wilson Charter School is an open-enrollment public charter school located in the Broadmoor neighborhood.  It currently serves over 600 students in grades K-8 from throughout the greater New Orleans region. Wilson operates during the school day as well as after school hours to serve the academic, social and emotional needs of students, families and community members. Through the school day, students study English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, arts and music.

By volunteering at Wilson Charter School, Loyola students will learn about child development, students' social and emotional needs, classroom management, mentoring, and the charter school culture in New Orleans.  They will also become familiar with K-8 curicula, grade-level expectations, Louisiana's state education standards, and the "community school" philosophy.  Most importantly, students will learn how to connect with and empower our youth.

Loyola service learners' primary responsibility is to provide academic support for students and teachers in classrooms. Service learners will support students individually and in small groups by reinforcing material that is taught in the classroom.  Additionally, service learners can form bonds with students and provide positive role models.

Preservice requirements

Students interested in serving at Wilson should be prepared for a brief interview.  Selected students will need to be fingerprinted and asked to provide a government-issued photo ID for a background check.  Orientation and training will be provided.
