teachNOLA

teachNOLA is an initiative of New Schools for New Orleans and the Recovery School District.  We seek to raise student achievement by recruiting, training, and placing dedicated teachers in our city's highest need classrooms.  Certification is not required for recent college graduates to apply to our highly selective Teaching Fellows Program.  Successful applicants to the Teaching Fellows Program are placed in local schools throughout New Orleans.  teachNOLA fellows are a highly motivated group with a strong passion for closing the achievement gap.

teachNOLA is seeking a few service learning students to assist with the following items.  We believe that service learning placements should be an active learning experience, so we are willing to work with students in terms of their specific interests:

  • Assist in all aspects of program operations – this can include interacting with candidates via phone and email, as well as ensuring the program is running smoothly
  • Assist in recruiting efforts – perform outreach to universities, community organizations and other partners to spread the word about teachNOLA – also attend information sessions and other special events
  • Potential to visit classrooms in which our Fellows are teaching throughout the Fall with our Training and Resource Manager
  • Special projects, as needed (event planning and coordination, outreach, mailings, grassroots efforts)
  • Participate in regular leadership meetings and communicate ongoing progress and challenges to the leadership team

We have a small staff of 3 and receive over 2,000 applications for our programs each year, so this is a great opportunity for a student to have significant responsibility and make a meaningful impact in placing qualified and dedicated teachers in our city’s neediest classrooms.  This may be an ideal placement for someone interested in a teaching career after graduation (especially with a program like Teach for America or teachNOLA), or someone interested in understanding educational justice through the lens of teachers and teaching.
