Taking more than one service learning class?

Learning objective: By providing Spanish tutoring and homework help to middle- and high-school aged kids from New Orleans or helping Spanish-speaking immigrants to New Orleans learn English, students pursuing the service learning option in this course will get reinforcement in basic Spanish grammar and reflect on the following questions: Does learning another language help young students in the United States today use English with more respect or correctness? Is there any evidence that requiring students to learn another language expands their horizons or increases their appreciation and awareness of diversity? Did you gain any respect for people who come to the United States and have to learn English to work and live?

How to get started

  1. Watch the video Getting Started with Your Service Learning Placement and then take the online quiz.
  2. Document all your hours using a service learning timesheet. Submit timesheets to the service learning office twice per semester (midterm and last day of the semester). Check the Loyola Service Learning Calendar for deadlines.
  3. Know that your agency supervisor will submit a performance evaluation on your work at the end of the semester. This evaluation will be given to your professor and incorporated into your class grade. See a sample evaluation>>
