Self-Orientation in the Placement

  1. Observe daily operations.
  2. Take a tour of facilities.
  3. Familiarize yourself with the goals and objectives of the organization.
  4. Observe and discuss with staff persons their roles and responsibilities.
  5. Discuss personal attitudes, values, and services that are expected at the agency.
  6. Familiarize yourself with in-house forms, library, and other resource information.
  7. When appropriate ask for permission to sit in on sessions where services are provided for a particular group or client.
  8. After you have completed your initial assignments, discuss with your supervisor the possibility of adding more or varied responsibilities or projects.
  9. Ask for feedback, evaluation, or letter of recommendation before you leave.
  10. Keep a log of your experiences (feelings, critical incidences, responsibilities, new skills, and accomplishments).
  11. When you prepare to leave, notify your supervisor several days in advance of your last day. You may want to formally thank the staff for the learning opportunities as well as share your experience(s) with the Service Learning Office and other students.
