STAIR: Start the Adventure in Reading

STAIR is a reading program for public school second graders who are reading below grade level.  Volunteer tutors work with students one-on-one using a professional reading curriculum.  Our mission is to improve the reading skills and self-esteem of elementary school students.  STAIR has been active in the New Orleans area for 25 years.

Loyola service learning students will be trained as reading tutors and assigned to work 1-on-1 with a child in the STAIR program.  They will learn about the New Orleans public school system and the development of younger elementary school children.

Even though most service learning classes last for only one semester, we expect all of our volunteer tutors to make a one year commitment to tutoring their child.  Please be aware of this when choosing your service learning placement.

Preservice Requirements

All students selected to serve as STAIR tutors must attend a mandatory tutor training.
