2009 Service Learning Fair

Seventh Ward Neighborhood Center

The Seventh Ward Neighborhood Center provides a safe place where residents can connect with one other as they rebuild their lives and neighborhood.  The Center is also home to The Porch, an organization dedicated to preserving the artistic, musical and cultural traditions of the Seventh Ward.  Center staff help residents develop programs to reflect the character and vision of the community.

7WNC would like to get Loyola service learning students from SOCI-A394-001: Social Justice in the Community with Professor Liv Newman involved in any of the following internships:

  1. Community Computer Lab Intern: Student will aid Center staff in developing a new community computer lab open to 7th Ward residents. Activities will include researching and developing models for technology trainings geared towards a variety of ages and experience levels with computers, researching and developing educational programs for children and youth, aiding in the recruitment and management of volunteer staff, and pursuing other interests specific to the intern’s personal or academic experience.
  2. Food Anthropology Intern: Specifically focused on the historical and cultural significance of the Circle Food Store, a historically Black-owned grocery and department store in the 7th Ward, the student will collect and creatively display information about the significance of food and culture in the 7th Ward.  The intern will use ethnographic research methods and historical data collection to develop an interdisciplinary account of the emotional and historical meaning of a neighborhood grocery and social center to the 7th Ward community.  Presentation of the material should be creative and will be used not only to document the project, but also to rally emotional and financial support for the re-opening of the Circle Food Store, which has been closed since Katrina.
  3. Neighbor Circles Intern: “Neighbor Circles” is a community organizing model developed by a Community Development Corporation in Lawrence, Massachusetts, focused on facilitating a space in which neighbors can come together, get to know one another, and talk about issues in the neighborhood.  The Neighbor Circles approach to community organizing is particularly interesting because it is hosted and facilitated by residents of the community with little interference from the Community Development Corporation, meaning that issues addressed and initiatives developed within the Neighbor Circles are entirely resident-led.  The Neighbor Circles intern will use the Lawrence model to develop a similar program suited for the 7th Ward Neighborhood. The intern will aid in the training of 7th Ward residents in how to facilitate and further develop the program.

Location: 1910 Urquhart St.
