Sample Projects

Benjamin Banneker Elementary School Project:

Sensation and Perception of Psychology is the in-depth study of human sensory processes and perceptual organization. In addition to an optional lab, this class required students' participation in a Service Learning project at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School, working with partially and profoundly deaf students.

Service Learners were required to complete 20 hours of service during the course of the semester. The Service Learners were required to write a reflection paper, which they presented in class illustrating their experiences, discoveries, and summaries of how the project illustrated the auditory sensory process and perceptual organization, which were studied in class.

The Habitat ReStore:

Several classes worked on Service Learning projects with the Habitat ReStore.

  • The Public Relations Writing Class was partnered with the Habitat ReStore project. Service Learners helped produce several pieces for the organization, including fliers, letters, newsletter articles, a brochure, and public service announcements for the radio.
  • Service Learners in the Introduction to Layout and Design created logos which were examined by a marketing specialist. One logo was chosen to be used on future brochures.
  • Some members of the The Introduction to DataBase Marketing class created a database in which information for donors and customers can be stored and tracked.
  • The Business Communications class created a new web site for the New Orleans affiliate.
