Playworks
Playworks' vision is that one day, every child in America will have access to safe, healthy play every day. Play creates essential opportunities for children to explore their imaginations, to connect with other people and to stretch and grow physically, emotionally and socially. Playworks focuses on five key areas to build play into the fabric of the community. They are: (1) recess time, (2) leadership development, (3) class game time, (4) interscholastic and developmental sports leagues, and (5) out-of-school programs.
Service learners will help facilitate recess, class game time, after-school programs, or developmental sports leagues at our partner schools. Service learners will be trained by Playworks NOLA to be able to lead games and play with children in a way that promotes our four core values of Healthy Play, Respect, Healthy Community and Inclusion. Students can expect to learn group management skills with both children and adults. Students will also learn fun games to use at recess or inside the classroom. Students will get to see how New Orleans Public School children play and exercise. Students who choose to volunteer in our office can learn about all the work that goes into running a multi-site nonprofit organization.
