Organic Chemistry II Lecture

Service learning is optional in this course.

Time commitment: 15 hours

All students in this course will complete a research project.  Students will have the option of completing this research project about chemistry topics encountered in everyday life, specifically in public service organizations.  In order to pursue this option, students will complete a service learning placement with one of the following agencies:

American Red Cross
ARC of Greater New Orleans
Bridge House
Edible Schoolyard
Harry Tompson Center
Hope Lodge
Luke's House Clinic
Nola Green Roots
Project Lazarus

Research should be focused on a chemistry concept which is related to your service learning experience.  Suggestions might include: brain chemistry or brain impairment/injury; the chemistry of cancer, HIV/AIDS or another condition/disease; the tests, treatments and medications associated with cancer, HIV/AIDS or other conditions/diseases; the chemistry of depression; the chemistry of disaster and effective disaster response (for example, clean water testing in a disaster environment); the chemistry of mental illness; the chemistry of addiction/recovery; the chemistry of nutritious eating; the chemistry of organic gardening or local food production (for example, fertilizers, composting).
