Nola Green Roots

NOLA Green Roots manages a network of community gardens throughout metropolitan New Orleans.  We teach hundreds of participants, including youth, low-income residents, and senior citizens, how to plant, care for and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables at a low cost.  We also run a compost service that helps local restaurants (and soon, residents) recycle food waste into living soil that nourishes our plants and helps us deliver baskets full of fresh, organic produce to our members twice a month.

Loyola service learning students can serve in the following roles:

  1. Garden assistant: Performs a variety of tasks to help our network of community gardens grow.  Includes working in the greenhouse, constructing garden boxes, caring for plants, pH testing, building compost, harvesting crops, greeting visitors and responding to requests for information.
  2. Membership assistant: Performs a variety of tasks to help grow our membership and volunteer base, and to support the needs of existing members, including updating files and records, social media outreach, helping to publicize workshops and special events, greeting visitors and responding to requests for information.
  3. Development assistant: Performs a variety of tasks to help build financial support for our programs including updating files and records, helping to plan special events, tracking deadlines and deliverables, greeting visitors and responding to requests for information.

Students can learn about organizing and community development around food access and food justice issues, data management, horticulture, social services, membership services, volunteer services, and sustainable agriculture.
